Due to the recent catastrophic events surrounding the island of Japan, the President of the Miss Universe Japan contest, Tanimoto Tatsuya, formally announced on Wednesday that the final event -scheduled for March 30th- has been postponed until further notice. The winner would go on to represent Japan at the Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paulo in September.
Two of this year’s fifteen finalists come from Miyagi Prefecture, affected by the quake and tsunami. Reigning Miss Universe Japan Maiko Itai thanked everyone via Twitter for their support and concern during these past days.
The announcement, published on the Miss Universe Japan official blog, states that “we regret very much this decision, but we thank everyone for their support”. It also encourages fans and friends to support the various charities that will help the rebuilding of the affected areas, as well as those affected by the disaster.
